The Niles-Buchanan YMCA will be hosting an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Certification Course beginning Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 7:00 pm.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA, in partnership with Berrien RESA, Van Buren Intermediate School District, and Niles Community Schools, is providing nutrition education to Kindergartener students in the Niles Community Schools. The program aligns curriculum activities and objectives with Michigan Model for Health Education and the USDA SNAP Ed Project to educate students and parents on the importance and benefits of maintaining a well-balanced, healthy diet along with regular physical fitness activities.

Registration is now open for winter Youth Basketball Leagues at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA. Age, grade and skill level determine team assignments and there are 35 teams. Each player will be given a skills assessment in December and begin practice in January. Official league games begin in February with the season lasting six weeks. Teams practice during the week and games are on Saturdays.

It was another successful year for the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run. 2,185 Runners from 2 countries and 34 States participated in this 33rd annual fundraising event. This race is the largest, most popular Thanksgiving Day Run in the Michiana area and all proceeds benefit the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

Every Thursday at 6:30 pm a group of runners meet at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA. One of the runners that participates in this weekly activity is 71 year old marathon runner, Robert Conway. For the past 20 years, Mr. Conway has participated in nearly every Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day race. “It’s for a good cause. Good for the community and good for everyone involved” stated Conway.

The Learning Tree Preschool of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA is promoting the Thanksgiving Day Run by participating in a fundraiser called Fast Feet. Preschoolers are learning the letters F, I, T, and incorporating family involvement through physical activity. Students are being encouraged to ask family and friends to make a donation for every hour of physical activity that they acquired.

In addition, to a financial donation students received a footprint that is added to a trail of footprints on display in the front lobby of the YMCA. Parents and their children can run, bike ride, and play together to obtain activity minutes. All of these activity hours lead up to participation of the Niles-Buchanan Thanksgiving Day Run.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA would like to thank their Prime sponsor Chemical Bank for supporting the 33rd annual Thanksgiving Day Run. This is the second year Chemical Bank is the Prime Sponsor for this race. All proceeds from the Thanksgiving Day Run benefit our Strong Kids Campaign, an annual fundraising campaign.

Many people that visit or live in the local community make the Thanksgiving Day Run an annual tradition. Bob Smola a resident of Decatur, Michigan has participated in all 33 Niles-Buchanan Thanksgiving Day Runs. “I still remember the very first Thanksgiving Day Run back in 1982. The start/finish line was at a hotel across from the baseball field south of town. It was either a Holiday Inn or Howard Johnson, not sure on that one. The course was pretty much the same as today; except we ran it counter clockwise" stated Smola.

Don’t forget to sign up for the 33rd Annual Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run. This year the Thanksgiving Day Run will offer a 10K and 5k run or walk and a 1 mile Family Fun Run. With over 2,300 participants from over 24 states; the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day run is among the largest in the Michiana area.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity? This race would not be possible without the support of hundreds of volunteers. The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is still looking for people to work various positions along the race route including human directional to encourage and direct the walkers/runners and water/first aide station attendants.
